10/3/24 -- The State of Things

It's kind of morbidly refreshing to see so many people coming to the same conclusions as a lot of us who have moved to Neocities because of social media as it is right now. On one hand, I finally don't feel like I'm part of some obscure niche group that's part of the minority in terms of our feelings towards social media, but now I'm seeing so many people sharing the same sentiment, and it's like I know!! That's what I've been saying!!

For instance, a YouTuber I really like, FunkyFrogBait, recently released a video talking about ragebait, and ended the video in a way that really made me feel like they get it. Like they feel the exact same way I do.

Social media, especially places like TikTok and Twitter (which I know I complain about the most but that's because I hate them lmao) have been slowly devolving into places where it's hard to gain attention without doing some really dumb shit. Media literacy also seems to be slowly slipping from people's grasps, which is especially not good for the younger folks online who think they'd never fall for stuff like this, when in reality they're falling for it all the time.

To be honest, this all just make me glad I decided to move here. It all started with makng a deliberate effort to stop doomscrolling, and now that I don't even have the means to do so, I feel like I'm all the better for it. Seeing all of these people becoming more and more jaded with the state of the mainstream web as it is, and actually making the effort to change things, whether just for themselves or for others as well is super cool to see.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; the internet isn't all bad. But it's bad enough that it really needs to change before it gets any worse.
